Half-time: QPR 1 Walsall 0

first_imgAlejandro Faurlin is making his first-team return at Loftus Road, where Shaun Wright-Phillips’ 29th-minute goal gave QPR a half-time lead.Manager Mark Hughes has indicated that Faurlin, sidelined since suffering cruciate damage in January, would not be considered for the Capital One Cup second-round clash. But after assessing the midfielder, Hughes decided that Faurlin was fit enough to play.Wright-Phillips put Rangers ahead by stabbing the ball past keeper David Grof from 10 yards out after being picked out by Bobby Zamora’s clever pass. The goal came three minutes after Andrew Johnson missed a great chance for Rangers, heading wide of the far post after being found unmarked by Jose Bosingwa’s right-wing cross.Johnson and Bosingwa were handed their first competitive starts for the club, while Ryan Nelsen is making his R’s debut. And Nelsen came close to giving Rangers an early lead when he headed Wright-Phillips’ corner narrowly wide.Wright-Phillips shot wide from Fabio’s low cross and Grof saved with his legs to deny Johnson before the deadlock was eventually broken.Follow West London Sport on TwitterFind us on Facebooklast_img read more

Womens Gymnastics Ohio State on the road at Iowa for third straight

Credit: Courtesy of Nicole JontonyWith another road meet under its belt after competing last weekend against No. 3 Michigan, the Ohio State women’s gymnastics team (0-2, 0-1 Big Ten) is gearing up for its third away meet in a row to begin the season at Iowa (1-3, 1-0 Big Ten) at 8 p.m. Saturday. Despite Michigan winning last weekend 197.550-194.925, Ohio State saw a 1.725 final score improvement, up from 193.200 in its season opener against UCLA.“I felt like the first meet, we hit 12 out of 24 routines, half. This week, I felt like we hit 15, still not even close to what we’re capable of doing, and we were a point and a half higher, almost two points higher,” head coach Meredith Paulicivic said. “Certainly a step in the right direction. We still need to kind of get the kinks out and work on a few things.”The Buckeyes had trouble during their last event on balance beam, finishing with a 47.900 score, when both freshman Jenna Swartzentruber and senior Alexis Mattern took falls during their routines as the first and second slots in the lineup. For the meet against Iowa, Ohio State will make adjustments to its lineup order. Senior Stefanie Merkle will take the first spot in lineup on beam, moving up from spot No. 6. Junior Jamie Stone will anchor the event.Ohio State had just three days of practice before hitting the road.“I felt like the focus this week, it was more on landings, and again, getting out the kinks,” Paulicivic said. “It’s a definite process, and especially with a young team like this. I feel like, a couple more meets under our belt, and I feel like things will get rolling a little bit smoother.”Iowa has posted similar results to the Buckeyes in its first two meets. The Hawkeyes posted a 193.000 to place fourth in their first competition and quad meet against Arizona State, Iowa State and Auburn. They then posted a 193.375 to beat Michigan State Saturday.“Iowa is kind of in the same boat as we are,” Paulicivic said. “They’re kind of having a slow starting season, but you never want to count them out. They almost made nationals last year, and I know they’re going to come out gang-busters.”The performance of the Buckeyes’ competitor is something to keep in mind, but it is not the main focus for them as they approach this weekend’s meet.“Our goal is to just keep building on what we have,” sophomore Olivia Aepli said. “We’re not really focusing on anyone else, we’re just focusing on ourselves and doing what we do in practice.”Ohio State’s meet against Iowa will be in Carver-Hawkeye Arena in Iowa City, Iowa, at 8 p.m. Saturday. read more

Frances final World Cup squad announced

first_imgFrance have announced their final 23-man squad for this summer’s World Cup in Russia with the likes of Karim Benzema  and Alexandre Lacazette surprisingly being omittedBoth forwards have struggled at their respective club this season with Benzema, in particular, struggling to find the back of the net at Real Madrid on a consistent basis with only five goals in 31 La Liga appearances to his name this season.Meanwhile, Lacazette struggled to get to grips with the demands of English football in his first season at Arsenal but he had scored eight goals in his last 10 appearances for the Gunners at the end of his debut campaign. The 26-year-old won the last of his 16 caps for France in a 2-2 friendly draw with Germany in November.Head coach Didier Deschamps has also left out Manchester United’s Anthony Martial, who has struggled to start regularly under Jose Mourinho in his two years in charge at Old Trafford. The 22-year-old did start in France’s 3-1 friendly victory over Russia in March, but it appears he has not done enough to convince Deschamps that he was worthy of a place. Also missing out is Marseille midfielder Dimitri Payet, who went off injured during the Europa League final defeat by Atletico Madrid on Wednesday.Despite having been out injured for almost the entire campaign, Manchester City full-back Benjamin Mendy has been included.Opinion: Neymar will earn respect back from the PSG fans Tomás Pavel Ibarra Meda – September 14, 2019 After completing his incredible return to Parc des Princes, we predict that Neymar will earn the respect back from PSG supporters. The situation between Neymar…France World Cup Squad:Goalkeepers: Hugo Lloris (Tottenham Hotspur), Steve Mandanda (Marseille), Alphonse Areola (PSG)Defenders: Djibril Sidibé (AS Monaco), Benjamin Pavard (VfB Stuttgart), Raphaël Varane (Real Madrid), Presnel Kimpembe (PSG), Adil Rami (Marseille), Samuel Umtiti (FC Barcelona), Lucas Hernandez (Atletico Madrid), Benjamin Mendy (Manchester City)Midfielders: Paul Pogba (Manchester United), N’Golo Kanté (Chelsea FC), Corentin Tolisso (Bayern Munich), Blaise Matuidi (Juventus), Steven N’Zonzi (Sevilla), Thomas Lemar (AS Monaco)Attackers: Kylian Mbappé (PSG), Olivier Giroud (Chelsea FC), Antoine Griezmann (Atletico Madrid), Ousmane Dembélé (FC Barcelona), Nabil Fékir (Lyon), Florian Thauvin (Marseille)Reserves: Wissam Ben Yedder (Sevilla), Kingsley Coman (Bayern Munich), Benoît Costil (Bordeaux), Mathieu Debuchy (St Étienne), Lucas Digne (FC Barcelona), Alexandre Lacazette (Arsenal FC), Anthony Martial (Manchester United), Adrien Rabiot (PSG), Mamadou Sakho (Crystal Palace), Moussa Sissoko (Tottenham Hotspur), Kurt Zouma (Chelsea). (Obtained by GetFootballNewsFrance)last_img read more

Low explains why he has dropped Mesut Ozil

first_imgGermany coach Joachim Low made comments that suggests reason for his decision to drop Arsenal star Mesut Ozil for this evening’s game against Sweden. His reason appears to have been made due to errors made against Mexico. Ozil was in the starting lineup for the defeat in Germany’s World Cup opener, but has been bench for their second group game.Low insists he still has faith in the high-profile players he has dropped – Ozil and Juventus midfielder Sami Khedira – and claims he still trusts them. But he suggested the changes he made were o address mistakes made against Mexico. Speaking yesterday before it was known that he had dropped Ozil for this evening’s game, Low said:Top 5 Bundesliga players to watch during the weekend Tomás Pavel Ibarra Meda – September 11, 2019 With the international activity cooling down for the next month, we go back to the Bundesliga’s Top 5 players to watch next weekend. The German…“Why should I lose faith with my important players? My fundamental faith in those players will not be broken because of one game,” he said via OffthePost.“Of course, one or two might be on the bench, but I trust them because they’re still at a very high level. To question these players now would be fatal. Of course I don’t.“There is no point questioning our idea. There will be corrections, to address the mistakes, but there’s no doubting our playing style.”That would suggest that the manager either felt Ozil made mistakes against Mexico or thought picking him in the starting lineup was a mistake in itself.last_img read more
